Last Friday, UFC Fight Night 50 took place, live from Mashantucket, CT at the beautiful Foxwoods Resort and Casino. The MMA fight fan public got a free treat, with a card filled with solid fights. Joe Lauzon, the almost local favorite fighting out of Massachusetts, took care of Michael Chiesa with ease. This was an emotional win for Lauzon, with most of his recent time and energy spent helping his young son fight cancer. His son is cancer free, and Joe is back to doing what he does best in the Octagon. Matt Mitrione took care of Derrick Lewis, with a fast first round knockout. Look for him to move up in the heavyweight division with back-to-back wins.
One of the biggest surprises was when underdog Ben Rothwell took care of Alistair Overeem in no time. The fight was stopped about halfway through the first round, with Overeem on the mat and Rothwell with his arms raised.
And then came the main event. We told you this was a deep card. Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza showed why he might be the most feared man in the middleweight division. He choked out Gegard Mousasi in the third round, and made it clear that he’s earned his title shot. Chris Weidman beware.
