The state of California is warning its drivers about “drugged driving” after a statewide survey found that 1 in 7 drivers in the state of California are driving with some sort of controlled substance in their system, more than twice as many as the number of people who are driving with alcohol in their system. The survey results, announced Monday by The California Office of Traffic Safety, found that 14% of drivers surveyed tested positive for driving under the influence of impairing drugs — both illegal and prescription — while 7.3% of drivers tested positive for driving with alcohol in their system. The impaired driving survey included more than 1,300 drivers who voluntarily provided saliva and or breath samples at roadside locations in cities through California between 10:00pm and 3:00 am Friday and Saturday night (16/17). The samples were tested for alcohol, THC, illegal drugs as well as prescription over the counter medications that may impair a motorist. Of all the drugs found in the system of the drivers 7.4% had Marijuana in their system making it the most commonly found drug in among the sampled motorist.
1LAW would like to urge any drivers that have taken any controlled substance to designate a driver. The risk of personal injury or hurting someone else is not worth it.
